There are three major passages in the Bible that discuss gifts. Many theologians and Bible teachers combine these passages to create what they call a “spiritual gifts list.” However, I don’t believe this approach accurately reflects what spiritual gifts are.
The three biblical passages concerning gifts are found in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4. Of these, only the passage in 1 Corinthians 12 uses the term “spiritual gifts.” I believe this distinction is significant. The gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12 are given by the Holy Spirit, whereas the gifts in Romans 12 are given by God the Father, and the gifts in Ephesians 4 are specifically described as being given by Christ.
This distinction matters because it helps us understand the different roles each member of the Trinity plays in equipping the church. God the Father imparts gifts related to character and service. Jesus Christ, the head of the church, equips us for ministry leadership. The Holy Spirit empowers believers with supernatural abilities to glorify God and serve others.
For this reason, this discussion on spiritual gifts will focus specifically on the gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12.
“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” — 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (NKJV)
The Nine Gifts of the Spirit
The gifts of the Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12 are:
The Word of Wisdom
The Word of Knowledge
Extraordinary Faith
Gifts of Healings
The Working of Miracles
Prophecy
Discerning of Spirits
Different Kinds of Tongues
The Interpretation of Tongues
The Importance of Each Gift
Each of these gifts serves a unique role within the body of Christ. For example, the word of wisdom provides divine insight into complex situations, while the word of knowledge brings supernatural revelation of facts unknown to the individual. Gifts of healing demonstrate God’s compassion, and the working of miracles showcases His unlimited power.
Prophecy builds up the church through encouragement and guidance, while discerning of spirits protects the body of Christ from deception. Different kinds of tongues and their interpretation serve as signs to unbelievers and bring spiritual edification when accompanied by understanding.
Some may argue that, since God is triune and the three persons of the Godhead are one, there is no differentiation between the gifts given by the Father, the Son, or the Spirit. While I agree that the Trinity is united, I also believe that each member of the Godhead fulfills different roles and functions within the Godhead. This is why I view the list in 1 Corinthians 12 as the definitive list of spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit.
The gifts given by God the Father in Romans 12 focus on practical expressions of service, such as leadership, teaching, and mercy. The gifts described in Ephesians 4 emphasize ministry roles like apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. By focusing on the spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12, we are examining how the Holy Spirit equips believers for supernatural ministry.
Supernatural vs. Natural Gifts
To be clear, I’m not saying this is the comprehensive list of all gifts that God gives to people. God bestows many wonderful gifts on individuals, but not all are supernatural. For example, talents like music, leadership, or craftsmanship are gifts from God but are not classified as supernatural gifts of the Spirit. Here, we are specifically referring to the supernatural gifts given by the Holy Spirit, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 12.
Walking in Supernatural Gifts
Operating in supernatural gifts requires dependence on the Holy Spirit. These gifts cannot be produced by human effort or skill. They are manifestations of God’s power working through us to bring glory to His name. Believers must cultivate a life of prayer, obedience, and faith to steward these gifts effectively.
Key Questions to Explore
In this exploration of spiritual gifts, we will dive into some critical questions:
Are Spiritual Gifts Still Active Today? There is much debate about whether these gifts ceased with the apostolic age or continue to operate in the modern church. This book will address this question with biblical evidence and practical observations. Historical accounts and testimonies of supernatural works will also shed light on this issue.
What Should Motivate Us in Using Spiritual Gifts? The answer to this question is essential. The misuse of spiritual gifts often stems from the wrong motivations, such as pride or a desire for attention. We will explore how love, humility, and the glory of God should be the driving forces behind the use of spiritual gifts. Without love, spiritual gifts become empty and ineffective.
What Are the Specific Roles and Functions of Each Gift? Each of the nine gifts has a distinct role in the body of Christ. We will examine how these gifts operate, their purpose, and the impact they can have when exercised properly. Through practical examples and stories, we will explore their relevance in both personal ministry and corporate worship.
A Roadmap for the Journey
This discussion is not just about understanding spiritual gifts but about living them out in a way that aligns with God’s will. Each gift serves a unique purpose, and when they are used in harmony, they build up the church and advance God’s kingdom.
To walk in the fullness of spiritual gifts, believers must cultivate a Spirit-led life. This includes daily communion with God, immersion in His Word, and an openness to the leading of the Holy Spirit. A Spirit-led life is marked by sensitivity to God’s voice and a willingness to step out in faith when prompted.
Building Unity Through Gifts
Spiritual gifts are not meant to divide the church or create hierarchies of importance. They are tools for service, given to glorify God and edify others. When believers use their gifts with humility and love, they contribute to the unity and maturity of the body of Christ.
Let’s embark on this journey together and discover how to walk in the supernatural power of the Spirit in a way that feels natural and authentic to who God created us to be.
How Does the Gift of Discerning of Spirits Relate to Spiritual Gifts?
Understanding spiritual discernment is essential when exploring the gift of discerning of spirits. This gift allows individuals to perceive and differentiate between the influences of the Holy Spirit and negative forces. By developing understanding spiritual discernment, believers can cultivate a deeper connection to their faith and enhance their spiritual journey.
