In Luke 4, we see Jesus launching His earthly ministry in a powerful way. He’s led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He faces temptation from the devil and emerges victorious.
Next, Jesus returns to Galilee, where He begins teaching in the synagogues and amazes people with His wisdom and authority. In His hometown of Nazareth, He declares the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Himself, proclaiming good news to the poor and oppressed.
As the chapter unfolds, Jesus demonstrates His power over demons and diseases, healing many who come to Him. His fame spreads throughout the region, marking the beginning of a ministry that will transform countless lives.
Jesus Is Tempted in the Wilderness
After His baptism, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, is led by the Spirit into the wilderness for 40 days. There, He faces a series of temptations from the devil.
40 Days of Fasting
During this time, Jesus eats nothing and becomes hungry. This period of fasting leaves Him in a state of physical weakness, making the devil’s temptations all the more challenging to resist.
Three Temptations by the Devil
The devil presents Jesus with three distinct temptations:
- Turning stones into bread to satisfy His hunger
- The devil says, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread” (Luke 4:3 NKJV).
- Jesus responds, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God'” (Luke 4:4 NKJV).
- Worshiping the devil in exchange for authority over all kingdoms
- The devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and offers them to Him if He will worship him.
- Jesus rebukes the devil, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve'” (Luke 4:8 NKJV).
- Testing God’s protection by jumping from the pinnacle of the temple
- The devil quotes Psalm 91:11-12, suggesting that God’s angels will protect Jesus if He jumps.
- Jesus responds, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God'” (Luke 4:12 NKJV).
Through these temptations, the devil seeks to undermine Jesus’ identity as the Son of God and derail His mission. But, Jesus remains steadfast, countering each temptation with Scripture and demonstrating His unwavering commitment to God’s will.
Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee
After triumphing over the devil’s temptations, Jesus returns to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. He begins teaching in the synagogues and gains widespread acclaim.
Teaching in the Synagogues
As Jesus teaches in the synagogues throughout Galilee, everyone praises Him. Luke 4:15 states, “And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” His teachings are filled with wisdom and authority, astonishing those who hear Him.
Jesus proclaims the good news of the kingdom of God and performs miraculous healings. Word of His ministry spreads quickly, and His fame grows throughout the region.
Rejected at Nazareth
Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth, where He had been brought up. On the Sabbath, He enters the synagogue and reads from the book of Isaiah, declaring that the prophecy is fulfilled in their hearing:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19)
Initially, the people marvel at His gracious words. But, they soon question His authority, referring to Him as Joseph’s son. Jesus responds by reminding them that prophets are not accepted in their own country.
He cites examples of Elijah and Elisha ministering to Gentiles, which enrages the people. They drive Him out of the city and attempt to throw Him off a cliff, but Jesus passes through their midst and goes His way.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit
In Capernaum, Jesus taught with authority and cast out an unclean spirit from a man in the synagogue. The people were amazed at His power over evil spirits.
Healing on the Sabbath
On the Sabbath, a man with an unclean spirit confronted Jesus in the synagogue, crying out, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34 NKJV).
Jesus rebuked the demon, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” (Luke 4:35 NKJV). The unclean spirit convulsed the man and came out with a loud cry.
The people were astonished at Jesus’ authority and power:
“What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” (Luke 4:36 NKJV)
News about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region. He demonstrated His divine power by:
- Casting out demons
- Healing the sick
- Teaching with authority
Jesus’ ministry was marked by compassion and authority over spiritual forces. His actions proved He was the Messiah, the Holy One of God.
Jesus Heals Many People
Jesus’ ministry is marked by numerous healings and exorcisms, demonstrating His authority and compassion. He brings wholeness and restoration to those suffering from physical ailments and spiritual oppression.
Simon’s Mother-in-Law Healed
After leaving the synagogue, Jesus enters Simon’s house, where He finds Simon’s mother-in-law sick with a high fever. He stands over her, rebukes the fever, and it leaves her. She immediately gets up and begins to serve them. This miracle showcases Jesus’ power over sickness and His ability to restore health instantly.
“Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.” (Luke 4:38-39, NKJV)
Demons Cast Out
As the sun sets, people bring to Jesus all who are sick and those possessed by demons. He lays His hands on each one, healing them and casting out the spirits with a word. The demons cry out, acknowledging Him as the Son of God, but He rebukes them, not allowing them to speak. This mass deliverance highlights Jesus’ authority over the spiritual area and His power to set the captives free.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues Throughout Galilee
After being rejected in Nazareth, I continued my ministry throughout Galilee. I taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all (Luke 4:15).
My teaching was characterized by authority and power. As it’s written, “And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.” (Luke 4:32)
I cast out demons, rebuking them when they tried to reveal my identity. The people were amazed, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” (Luke 4:36)
My fame spread throughout the region as I:
- Healed the sick, including Simon’s mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39)
- Cast out demons from many who were possessed (Luke 4:41)
- Preached the kingdom of God in the synagogues of Galilee (Luke 4:44)
As the demons came out of many, they cried out, saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” But I rebuked them, not allowing them to speak, for they knew that I was the Christ (Luke 4:41).

As I reflect on Jesus’ early ministry, I’m inspired by His unwavering faith, His love for the marginalized, and His willingness to confront evil head-on. May His example encourage us to walk in His footsteps, trust in God’s plan, and be a light in a world that desperately needs His love and grace.
