In this chapter, we witness Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, where he institutes the Lord’s Supper and predicts his betrayal. We also see Jesus pray earnestly in the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the agony of what’s to come.

The chapter culminates with Jesus’ arrest, Peter’s denial, and the beginning of Jesus’ trials before the religious leaders. It’s a sobering reminder of the sacrifice Christ made for our sins and the importance of remaining faithful to him.

Preparing the Passover Meal

Jesus sends Peter and John to make preparations for the Passover meal, providing them with specific instructions:

  1. Enter the city and look for a man carrying a jar of water
  2. Follow him to the house he enters
  3. Ask the owner, “The Teacher says, ‘Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?'” (Luke 22:11 NKJV)

The disciples find everything just as Jesus described, and they prepare the Passover meal accordingly. This demonstrates Jesus’ divine knowledge and authority over the situation.

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Amid the Passover preparations, a dark plot unfolds. The chief priests and scribes, threatened by Jesus’ growing influence, conspire to kill him. They find an unlikely ally in Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who agrees to betray Jesus for a sum of money.

“Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.” (Luke 22:3-4 NKJV)

This betrayal sets the stage for Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecies concerning the Messiah’s suffering.

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

During the Passover meal, Jesus establishes a new covenant through the institution of the Lord’s Supper. He takes bread, gives thanks, and breaks it, saying:

“This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (Luke 22:19 NKJV)

Similarly, he takes the cup after supper, declaring:

“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” (Luke 22:20 NKJV)

This powerful symbolism points to Jesus’ sacrificial death and its significance for believers. The Lord’s Supper serves as a lasting ordinance, reminding us of Christ’s atonement and our union with him.

Jesus Teaches the Disciples

Unveiling the Passion: A Powerful Overview of Luke 22

Jesus uses the Last Supper to teach his disciples valuable lessons. He emphasizes the importance of servanthood and predicts Peter’s denial.

The Greatest Among Them

A dispute arises among the disciples about who’s the greatest. Jesus teaches them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ But not so among you; but, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves” (Luke 22:25-26 NKJV). He sets the example by serving them, saying, “I am among you as the One who serves” (Luke 22:27 NKJV). True greatness comes through:

  • Humility
  • Servanthood
  • Putting others first

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

Jesus warns the disciples, especially Peter, that Satan wants to sift them like wheat. He tells Peter, “I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren” (Luke 22:32 NKJV). Peter boldly declares his loyalty, but Jesus predicts:

“I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.” (Luke 22:34 NKJV)

  • Demonstrates Jesus’ omniscience
  • Highlights human weakness and the need for God’s strength
  • Sets the stage for Peter’s restoration and leadership in the early church

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

After the Last Supper, Jesus leads his disciples to the Mount of Olives, a place where he often prayed. He instructs them to pray so they won’t fall into temptation.

Jesus’ Anguish and Prayer

Jesus separates himself from the disciples and begins to pray earnestly, marked by intense emotional and spiritual struggle. Luke 22:44 describes his anguish:

“And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (Luke 22:44, NKJV)

Jesus’ prayer demonstrates his humanity and the immense burden he carried. He asks the Father if it’s possible for this cup to be taken from him, yet submits to the Father’s will (Luke 22:42).

An Angel Strengthens Jesus

During Jesus’ anguish, an angel from heaven appears to strengthen him:

“Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.” (Luke 22:43, NKJV)

This divine intervention highlights the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and the Father’s support during his darkest hour. It also emphasizes the importance of prayer and reliance on God’s strength in times of distress.

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

Unveiling the Passion: A Powerful Overview of Luke 22

Jesus faces betrayal and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. These pivotal events set the stage for his trials and crucifixion.

Judas Betrays Jesus with a Kiss

Judas arrives in the garden with a crowd armed with swords and clubs. He approaches Jesus and betrays him with a prearranged signal: a kiss.

“But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'” (Luke 22:48 NKJV)

This act of treachery fulfills Jesus’ prediction during the Last Supper and demonstrates the depth of Judas’ deceit.

Peter Cuts Off Malchus’ Ear

As the crowd seizes Jesus, Peter reacts impulsively. He draws his sword and strikes the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

“And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.” (Luke 22:50 NKJV)

This violent act contrasts with Jesus’ teachings on love and nonviolence, highlighting the disciples’ struggle to grasp his message fully.

Jesus Rebukes the Crowd

Jesus rebukes the crowd, questioning their need to apprehend him with weapons as if he were a criminal. He points out their cowardice in not arresting him openly in the temple.

“When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” (Luke 22:53 NKJV)

Even though the injustice of his arrest, Jesus submits to God’s will, understanding that this moment is part of a greater divine plan.

Peter Denies Knowing Jesus

After Jesus’ arrest, Peter follows him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. There, a servant girl sees Peter and says, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee” (Matthew 26:69, NKJV).

Peter denies it, saying, “I do not know what you are saying” (Matthew 26:70, NKJV). He then goes out to the gateway, where another girl sees him and says to those there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth” (Matthew 26:71, NKJV).

Again, Peter denies it with an oath: “I do not know the Man!” (Matthew 26:72, NKJV). A little later, those standing by come up to Peter and say, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you” (Matthew 26:73, NKJV).

Peter begins to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crows, and Peter remembers Jesus’ words: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times” (Matthew 26:75, NKJV). He goes out and weeps bitterly.

This event showcases:

  • Human weakness in the face of pressure
  • The fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy
  • The need for reliance on God’s strength

Even though his earlier bravado, Peter succumbs to fear and denies Jesus three times. Yet, this is not the end of Peter’s story. After the resurrection, Jesus restores Peter, and he goes on to become a key leader in the early church, demonstrating the power of forgiveness and transformation.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

After his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is taken to the high priest’s house to face the Sanhedrin. This council, comprised of chief priests, scribes, and elders, is the highest judicial and ecclesiastical body in ancient Israel.

Jesus Declares He Is the Son of God

During his trial, the Sanhedrin questions Jesus about his identity. When asked if he is the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus responds, “You rightly say that I am” (Luke 22:70, NKJV). This declaration affirms his divine status, which the council interprets as blasphemy.

Jesus Is Mocked and Beaten

Following his declaration, the Sanhedrin subjects Jesus to mockery and physical abuse. Luke 22:63-65 (NKJV) describes the scene:

“Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, ‘Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?’ And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.”

This cruel treatment emphasizes the deep hostility and rejection Jesus faces from the religious authorities. Even though the abuse, he remains steadfast, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to fulfilling his divine mission.

Conclusion

Luke 22 serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus’ unwavering love and sacrifice for humanity. It’s a chapter that draws me closer to Christ as I witness his steadfast commitment to God’s plan, even in the face of betrayal, suffering, and death.

Jesus’ teachings on servanthood, humility, and reliance on God’s strength resonate deeply with me, encouraging me to emulate his example in my own life. As I reflect on the profound events of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice and the transformative power of his love and forgiveness.
