Bible Study About Grace: Part One -Understanding Grace

Introduction

Grace is one of the most important concepts in the Christian faith. It is the unmerited, undeserved favor of God poured out on sinful humanity, bringing forgiveness, transformation, and empowerment through Jesus Christ. As the apostle John wrote, “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (John 1:16) In this Bible study, we will explore the rich biblical meaning of grace, tracing its roots in the Old Testament, its personification in Jesus Christ, and its implications for us as believers.

Reflect:

  • What comes to mind when you think of the word “grace”?
  • Why do you think grace is such a central concept in Christianity?

Defining Grace

The English word “grace” is the translation of the Greek word charis, meaning favor, blessing, or kindness. It can also mean beauty, charm, or elegance. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word chen carries a similar meaning of favor, grace, charm, or elegance.

Theologically, grace refers to the unmerited favor of God toward humanity. It is closely related to the concept of God’s hesed, His loyal steadfast love for His people. As sinners, we do not deserve God’s favor, but He gives it freely out of His love and goodness. The apostle Paul wrote, “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Key Verses:

  • “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
  • “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Reflect:

  • How would you explain the concept of grace to someone unfamiliar with Christianity?
  • Why is it important to understand that grace is unmerited and undeserved?

Grace in the Old Testament

Bible Study About Grace: Part One -Understanding Grace

While grace is most fully revealed in the New Testament, it is also present throughout the Old Testament. We see God’s grace in His dealings with individuals like Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, choosing them and blessing them despite their flaws and failures.

God’s grace is also evident in His covenants with His people, such as the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 12:1-3) and the Mosaic covenant (Exodus 19-24). These covenants were based on God’s grace and initiative, not on Israel’s worthiness. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament foreshadowed the ultimate gracious sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

The prophet Jeremiah spoke of the new covenant of grace that God would establish: “I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

Key Verses:

  • “But Noah found favor [grace] in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8)
  • “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” (Psalm 103:8)

Reflect:

  • What examples of God’s grace in the Old Testament stand out to you?
  • How does the new covenant prophesied by Jeremiah reveal God’s grace?

Grace Personified in Jesus Christ

God’s grace is most fully and finally revealed in the person and work of Jesus Christ. John’s gospel declares, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) In Christ, grace is embodied and made visible.

Jesus came “full of grace,” meaning that grace characterized His entire earthly life and ministry. The grace He manifested was not just a feeling or attitude, but actively expressed in His actions – healing the sick, forgiving sinners, reaching out to the marginalized and oppressed. Ultimately, Jesus’ life of grace culminated in His death on the cross, where He took upon Himself the punishment for our sins. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became the source of saving grace for all who would believe in Him. “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.” (Titus 2:11) We are “justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24) Salvation is entirely by grace, not by our own works or merit.

Key Verses:

  • “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)
  • “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” (Ephesians 1:7)

Reflect:

  • How does Jesus embody and demonstrate God’s grace?
  • Why is it crucial to understand that salvation is entirely by grace through faith in Christ?

The Riches of God’s Grace

The grace that God extends to us in Christ is described in Scripture as “the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7). These riches include the spiritual blessings of forgiveness, redemption, adoption, and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

Through grace, we are forgiven of all our sins – past, present, and future. As Paul wrote, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us.” (Ephesians 1:7-8) God’s grace not only forgives us but also redeems us from the power and penalty of sin. “He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)

God’s grace also adopts us into His family as His beloved children. “He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:5-6) We are no longer slaves to sin, but sons and daughters of the living God.

Furthermore, God graciously gives us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us, empowering us for life and ministry. “He saved us…by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” (Titus 3:5-6) The Spirit is the “Spirit of grace” (Hebrews 10:29) who applies the benefits of Christ’s work to our lives.

Key Verses:

  • “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.” (Ephesians 1:11)
  • “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)

Reflect:

  • Take a moment to reflect on the riches of God’s grace in your own life. How have you experienced His forgiveness, redemption, adoption, and the indwelling Spirit?
  • Why is it important not to take God’s grace for granted, but to actively thank and praise Him for it?

Living in Grace

Having received the abundance of God’s grace, we are called to live in the reality of that grace day by day. This means continually fixing our eyes on Jesus, the source and embodiment of grace. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18) As we behold Christ, we are transformed by the Spirit to become more like Him.

Living in grace also means continually growing in our understanding and experience of grace. The apostle Peter exhorts us, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18) We are to be students of grace, always learning more of its depths and implications.

One key implication of God’s grace is that we are to extend grace to others. Having been forgiven, we are to forgive. Having received mercy, we are to be merciful. “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32) As recipients of grace, we become conduits of grace to others.

Living in grace does not mean that we have license to sin. On the contrary, grace teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions (Titus 2:12). But it does mean that when we do sin, we can confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Key Verses:

  • “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)
  • “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Reflect:

  • What does it mean to you to “grow in the grace and knowledge” of Jesus Christ? What practices help you to do this?
  • How can you extend more of God’s grace to the people in your life? Is there someone specific you need to show grace to right now?

Conclusion

Grace is truly amazing! It is the unmerited, undeserved favor of God towards sinners like us. It flows from the heart of God, was embodied in the life and death of Jesus, and is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. It brings forgiveness, redemption, adoption, transformation, and empowerment.

As those who have received the riches of God’s grace, let us live in the light and power of that grace each day. Let us continually look to Jesus, grow in grace, and extend grace to others. And let us forever praise God for His glorious grace!

“To the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:6)

Reflect:

  • Take a moment to thank God for His amazing grace in your life. Write out a prayer of praise for His grace.
  • What is your key takeaway from this study on grace? How do you want to live differently in light of what you’ve learned?
