Acts 4 narrates the aftermath of Peter and John healing a lame man in Jesus’ name. Their bold proclamation of the gospel leads to opposition from the religious authorities.
Preaching and Healing Leads to Arrest
Peter and John’s powerful preaching and miraculous healing grab the attention of the priests, temple guards, and Sadducees. These leaders are greatly disturbed by the apostles’ teaching about Jesus’ resurrection, as the Sadducees don’t believe in the afterlife (Acts 4:1-2).

So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. (Acts 4:18 NKJV)
The religious leaders wanted to suppress the gospel message out of fear and jealousy. They couldn’t assign any valid reason for their command, other than their own will.
Peter and John’s Refusal to Be Silent

But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20 NKJV)

The believers begin by acknowledging God as the Sovereign Creator of heaven and earth. They recognize that God spoke through His servant David concerning the rage of nations and plotting of peoples against the Lord and His Christ, which has now been fulfilled in the opposition to Jesus by Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel (Acts 4:24-28). Even though this opposition, they affirm that these men only did what God’s hand and purpose determined before to be done.
Asking for Boldness to Keep Preaching
Considering the threats from the religious authorities, the believers ask God to look upon them and grant His servants boldness to speak His word. They pray, “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word” (Acts 4:29 NKJV). They also ask God to stretch out His hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of His holy Servant Jesus.
The believers’ prayer focuses on:
- Acknowledging God’s sovereignty
- Asking for boldness to continue preaching
- Requesting God’s healing power and miracles
They recognize their need for divine empowerment to fearlessly proclaim the gospel in the face of opposition.
Prayer Answered with Shaking and Filling of the Holy Spirit
God immediately answers their prayer in a powerful way. The place where they are assembled together is shaken, and they are all filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:31). This physical shaking and infilling of the Spirit serves as a tangible confirmation of God’s presence and power among them.
As a result, the believers speak the word of God with boldness, just as they had prayed. The Holy Spirit empowers them to:
- Preach fearlessly
- Witness powerfully
- Advance the gospel even though opposition
This fresh infilling of the Spirit enables them to continue the work Christ has called them to do with renewed courage and zeal.
The Generosity and Unity of the Early Church
The early believers demonstrated remarkable unity and generosity, sharing their possessions to ensure no one among them was in need. Their selfless acts of giving and mutual support were a powerful testimony to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Sharing All Things in Common
