They exchange the glory of God for images of created things and engage in shameful lusts. “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things” (Romans 1:22-23, NKJV). “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions” (Romans 1:26, NKJV).
God Gives Them Over
Because of their persistent rejection of God, He gives them over to their sinful desires and the consequences that follow. “Hence God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts” (Romans 1:24, NKJV). “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting” (Romans 1:28, NKJV). This divine abandonment allows sin to run its course, leading to further depravity and judgment.
The Guilt of the Gentiles
Paul reveals the guilt of the Gentiles, who had access to the knowledge of God through creation yet failed to honor Him. Their rejection of the truth led to a downward spiral of sin and depravity.

God has made His existence and attributes evident through His creation. “Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20, NKJV). Suppressing the Truth
Even though this clear revelation, the Gentiles suppressed the truth about God. They refused to acknowledge Him as the Creator and instead embraced futile thinking and darkened hearts. “Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21, NKJV). Their willful rejection of God led to a distorted understanding of reality.
Exchanging the Truth for a Lie
As a result of suppressing the truth, the Gentiles exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal beings and animals. “They exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever” (Romans 1:25, NKJV). This idolatry led to sexual immorality and the degradation of their bodies. God gave them over to their sinful desires, allowing the consequences of their choices to unfold.
The Depravity of Mankind

Unnatural Sexual Relations

Deserving of Death
Paul concludes this section with a sobering statement: “who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).
Those who engage in such sinful behaviors are deserving of death, both physically and spiritually. They face the righteous judgment of God.
Shockingly, not only do they participate in these sins, but they also approve of others who practice them. This reveals the depth of their depravity and their complete rejection of God’s standards.
