Pursuing Christ Passionately: Insights from Philippians 3

Philippians 3 is a powerful chapter that reveals the heart of the Apostle Paul. It’s a message that challenges us to pursue a deeper relationship with Christ and let go of everything else.

In this chapter, Paul shares his testimony and the things he once valued. But he now considers them worthless compared to knowing Christ. He encourages us to press on toward the goal of becoming more like Jesus.

Paul’s Spiritual Journey

In Philippians 3, Paul shares his powerful testimony of spiritual transformation. He reveals the dramatic shift in his priorities and values as he encountered Christ.

Past: Confidence in the Flesh

Before knowing Christ, Paul put his confidence in his Jewish heritage, strict religious observance, and zealous persecution of the church. He summarized his impressive pedigree:

• “Circumcised the eighth day”
• “Of the stock of Israel”
• “Of the tribe of Benjamin”
• “A Hebrew of the Hebrews”
• “Concerning the law, a Pharisee”
• “Concerning zeal, persecuting the church”
• “Concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:5-6)

Yet, after encountering Christ, Paul realized these accomplishments were worthless compared to knowing Jesus.

Present: Knowing Christ

Paul’s life radically changed when he met the risen Christ. His consuming passion became knowing and experiencing Jesus deeply:

“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7-8)

Paul gladly sacrificed everything to gain Christ and be found in Him, not having his own righteousness, but that which is through faith in Christ. His ultimate aim was to know Christ intimately—the power of His resurrection, fellowship of His sufferings, and conformity to His death.

Future: Pressing Toward the Goal

Paul didn’t consider himself to have already attained perfection, but he wholeheartedly pressed on to lay hold of that for which Christ laid hold of him. With single-minded focus, he declared:

“One thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

Paul’s spiritual ambition was to know Christ fully, experience the power of His resurrection, and eventually attain the reward of Christlikeness. This eternal perspective propelled him forward in his spiritual journey.

Warning Against False Teachers

In Philippians 3, Paul issues a stern warning against false teachers who promote legalism and undermine the true gospel of grace. He exposes their dangerous teachings and contrasts them with the authentic message of salvation through faith in Christ alone.

The Danger of Legalism

False teachers often emphasize strict adherence to religious rules and rituals as a means of earning God’s favor. But, this legalistic approach is contrary to the gospel of grace. Paul states, “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!” (Philippians 3:2, NKJV). He uses strong language to underscore the seriousness of the threat posed by these legalists who distort the truth. Their teachings lead people away from genuine faith and into a futile attempt to achieve righteousness through human effort.

The True Circumcision

In contrast to the false teachers’ emphasis on physical circumcision, Paul asserts that true believers are the “circumcision,” not in a literal sense, but spiritually. He writes, “For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3, NKJV). True circumcision is not an outward act but an inward transformation of the heart. It’s characterized by:

• Worshiping God in the Spirit
• Rejoicing in Christ Jesus
• Placing no confidence in human achievements or status

Paul stresses that genuine faith is not based on external markers or religious pedigree but on a personal relationship with Christ and complete reliance on His finished work on the cross.

The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ

Paul’s life was radically transformed when he encountered Jesus Christ. His perspective on what truly matters shifted dramatically as he discovered the immeasurable value of knowing Christ intimately.

Considering Everything Loss

Considering the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ, Paul now sees his former accomplishments and status as worthless. He declares, “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ” (Philippians 3:7 NKJV). Paul realized that his religious pedigree, education, and zeal were eventually meaningless compared to the treasure of knowing Jesus.

He goes even further, stating, “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8 NKJV). Paul is willing to let go of everything—his reputation, comforts, and former way of life—to pursue a deeper relationship with Christ.

Gaining Christ and His Righteousness

Paul’s ultimate goal is to be found in Christ, not relying on his own righteousness based on the law, but on the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ. He writes, “and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Philippians 3:9 NKJV).

This righteousness is a gift from God, received by faith, not earned through human effort. Paul recognizes that his standing before God is solely based on Christ’s perfect righteousness imputed to him. His desire is to experience the power of Christ’s resurrection and share in His sufferings, being conformed to His death (Philippians 3:10).

Pressing On Toward the Goal

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. My eyes are fixed on what lies ahead, not what’s behind.

Forgetting What Is Behind

Paul declares, “forgetting those things which are behind” (Philippians 3:13). He doesn’t dwell on his past accomplishments or failures. Instead, he focuses on his relationship with Christ and the promise of eternal life.

As believers, we too must let go of our past:

• Failures and sins that haunt us
• Accomplishments we’re tempted to boast about
• Hurts and offenses we need to forgive

“Hence, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). In Christ, our past doesn’t define us. We’re free to move forward into God’s purposes.

Straining Forward to What Is Ahead

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). Paul uses vivid imagery here. “Press” means to pursue something with all your energy, like a runner straining toward the finish line.

Our goal and prize is Jesus Himself – knowing Him intimately, being transformed into His likeness, and one day seeing Him face to face. This requires:

1. Single-minded focus
2. Discipline and endurance
3. Laying aside distractions and weights

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1-2). As we fix our eyes on Jesus and eternity, He empowers us to press on faithfully until we reach the goal.

Imitating Paul’s Example

I’m encouraged by Paul’s example in Philippians 3. He shows us what it looks like to passionately pursue Christ above all else.

Standing Firm in the Lord

Paul urges the Philippians to “stand fast in the Lord” (Philippians 4:1 NKJV). This means:

• Remaining steadfast in our faith
• Not being swayed by false teachings
• Continuing to grow in our relationship with Christ

We stand firm by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. Like Paul, we press on toward the goal of knowing Him more deeply each day.

Rejoicing in the Lord

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4 NKJV). Paul’s joy was rooted in his relationship with Christ, not his circumstances.

We can rejoice in the Lord because:

1. He loves us unconditionally
2. He is always with us
3. He is working all things together for our good

Choosing to rejoice is an act of faith. It shifts our focus from our problems to God’s goodness and faithfulness. Let’s imitate Paul’s example by continually rejoicing in the Lord, no matter what we face.

Citizenship in Heaven

Paul reminds the Philippians that their true citizenship is in heaven. As believers, we eagerly await the return of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Eagerly Awaiting the Savior

We look forward to Christ’s second coming with great anticipation. Paul states, “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20 NKJV).

Our ultimate hope isn’t found in this world but in the promise of Christ’s return. We live as temporary residents on earth, knowing that our true home is with Him.

Transformed Into His Likeness

This transformation isn’t just physical but also spiritual. As we await His coming, we are being conformed to the image of Christ.
