Hannah’s prayers and devotion to God speak to anyone looking for the power of the Lord.

Now, not only will an introduction occur to Hannah’s story, but also a conclusion describing what made her story and challenges/information so encouraging for others to increase their faith.

Hannah’s Story in the Bible

Hannah’s story in 1 Samuel is a powerful example of faith and perseverance. Her journey showcases deep devotion to God.

The Challenge of Barrenness

Hannah was the woman who could not give birth. She was in great distress. Barrenness was considered a curse in biblical times. People thought childlessness represented God’s disfavor.

Elkanah, her husband, loved her still but also had another wife, Peninnah, who bore him children. Peninnah taunted Hannah because she was barren. Not only this, but also a maternal conception of jealousy emerged between the rival wives.

They all traveled to Shiloh to make sacrifices to the Lord. Hannah was filled with even more torment because of the existence of Peninnah. She ended up so tormented that she did not eat and cried (1 Samuel 1:7). Despite this, she continued to appeal to the Lord.

Prayer and Promise

Hannah took her sorrow and transformed it into a prayer. The New King James Version states, “In bitterness of soul, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept anguish” (1 Samuel 1:10 NKJV).

She was at the tabernacle in Shiloh, praying for a son when she made her vow. If the good Lord blessed her with a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord all the days of his life (1 Samuel 1:11 NKJV). Eli, the Shiloh priest, observed her praying and assumed she was intoxicated because only her lips were moving.

After she explained her situation to Eli, he told her to “Go in peace” (1 Samuel 1:17 NKJV). After Eli’s priestly blessing and making her vow known to God, Hannah’s face had visibly changed; she knew God heard her prayers.

Persistence in Prayer

Hannah never gave up praying. She cried out to God continually even though her barrenness. In 1 Samuel 1:10, it says, “And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish” (NKJV). This shows her deep commitment.

She prayed specific prayers. Asking for a son showed her faith in God’s power. By being persistent, Hannah demonstrated unwavering belief.

Her consistent prayer life is a model for all believers:

  • Pray daily
  • Seek God earnestly
  • Be specific with requests

Trust and Surrender to God’s Will

Hannah trusted God completely. She surrendered her desires to His will. In 1 Samuel 1:11, she vowed, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant…, but will give Your maidservant a male child…” (NKJV).

Even after receiving Eli’s blessing, she waited patiently for God’s timing:

  • Made vows without hesitation
  • Accepted God’s timing
  • Trusted His plan over hers

Surrendering to God brings peace through trust.

Faithfulness and Integrity

Hannah kept her promise to God. Once He granted her request for a son, she dedicated Samuel back to Him as stated in 1 Samuel 1:28: “Hence I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord” (NKJV).

  • Keeping promises made before God
  • Showing integrity in fulfilling vows
  • Living faithfully according to commitments
