God had explicitly commanded them not to worship idols in Exodus 20:4-5. Yet they neglected this commandment by bowing before the calf and offering sacrifices. Their actions provoked God’s anger so much that He told Moses He might destroy them (Exodus 32:10).
Moses interceded for them, but their disobedience still led to severe consequences. About 3,000 men died by the sword due to this rebellion (Exodus 32:28). This story shows me how neglecting God’s word can lead to devastating results.

Eli’s Failure to Discipline His Sons
Eli, a priest, neglected his duty as a father by failing to correct his sons’ sinful behavior. Hophni and Phinehas, his sons, were corrupt priests who dishonored God by abusing their sacred role (1 Samuel 2:12-17). They took the best parts of sacrifices for themselves and committed immoral acts at the tabernacle.
Instead of confronting them firmly, Eli only gave them a weak rebuke. God’s response was severe: He declared judgment on Eli’s household. “For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them” (1 Samuel 3:13, NKJV).
Eli’s failure led to the death of his sons and the loss of Israel’s spiritual leadership. This story warns me about ignoring my responsibility in correcting wrongdoing within my family or ministry.
Jonah Neglecting His Mission to Nineveh
Jonah disobeyed God’s command to preach repentance in Nineveh. Instead of going east as instructed, he boarded a ship heading west toward Tarshish (Jonah 1:1-3). By running away from this mission, Jonah showed an unwillingness to fulfill his prophetic responsibility.
God sent a great storm as punishment for Jonah’s neglect. When the sailors cast lots, they discovered Jonah was responsible for their trouble (Jonah 1:7-10). After being thrown into the sea and swallowed by a great fish, Jonah repented inside its belly.
Afterward, he finally obeyed God’s call to warn Nineveh (Jonah 3:4-5). This account reminds me that neglecting God’s assignments can bring unnecessary trials until we surrender fully to His will.
