The Bible has a lot to say about giving, and it’s an important part of our Christian faith. As believers, we’re called to be generous with our time, talents, and resources.

Biblical Principles of Giving
Giving is a fundamental part of the Christian faith. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings on the importance of generosity and how it reflects our love for God and others.
Give with a Willing Heart
“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7, NKJV).
I should give willingly, not out of obligation or pressure. My giving should come from a sincere desire to honor God and support His work.
Give Intentionally and Systematically
“On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper” (1 Corinthians 16:2, NKJV).
I ought to make giving a planned and regular part of my budget. By setting aside a portion of my income consistently, I demonstrate my commitment to God’s kingdom.
Give Generously and Cheerfully
“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6, NKJV).
I’m encouraged to give generously, knowing that God promises to bless me in return. When I give with a joyful heart, I experience the true happiness that comes from obedience to God.
“For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have” (2 Corinthians 8:12, NKJV).
I should give in proportion to how God has blessed me. Whether my resources are great or small, what matters most is my willingness to share what I have to further God’s work.
Old Testament Teachings on Giving
The Old Testament provides a foundation for understanding the importance and principles of giving. It reveals God’s heart and his desire for his people to be generous and to honor him with their resources.
Giving from the Abundance of the Heart (Exodus 35)
In Exodus 35, we see a beautiful example of the Israelites giving willingly and generously to the construction of the Tabernacle. God instructed Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering” (Exodus 35:5 NKJV). The people responded with enthusiasm:
“Then everyone came whose heart was stirred, and everyone whose spirit was willing, and they brought the LORD’s offering for the work of the tabernacle of meeting” (Exodus 35:21 NKJV).
This passage highlights several key principles:
- Giving should come from a willing heart, not out of compulsion
- Everyone can participate in giving, regardless of their resources
- Giving is a response to God’s instruction and a way to contribute to his work
Giving as an Act of Worship

Giving was an integral part of the Israelites’ worship, and it was to be done:
- Regularly (three times a year)
- By everyone (all males)
- Proportionately (according to the blessing received)
This principle of worshipful giving carries into the New Testament, where Paul encourages believers to give as “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18 NKJV). As we give with a heart of worship, we honor God and express our love and devotion to him.

Jesus emphasized the heart behind giving. In Matthew 6:1-4, He taught, “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven” (NKJV). Jesus highlighted the importance of giving secretly and with pure motives, not seeking recognition from others.
Jesus also commended sacrificial giving. In Mark 12:41-44, He praised a poor widow who gave two small coins, saying, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury” (NKJV). Her sacrificial heart pleased God more than the larger amounts given by the wealthy.
The Example of the Early Church
The early church modeled sacrificial and generous giving. In Acts 2:44-45, we see that “all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need” (NKJV). They willingly shared their resources to meet each other’s needs.
In Acts 4:32-37, Barnabas sold a field and brought the money to the apostles to distribute to those in need. This act of generosity encouraged others to follow suit, creating a culture of giving in the early church.

God Promises to Bless the Giver
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38 NKJV)
God promises to bless us abundantly when we give generously. He multiplies our seed sown and increases the fruits of our righteousness (2 Corinthians 9:10). As we give, we open the door for God to pour out His blessings upon us, both spiritually and materially.
The Bible assures us that we can never out-give God. He honors our faith and obedience, rewarding us with provision, favor, and joy. When we trust Him with our resources, He proves Himself faithful to meet our every need.
Giving Enriches the Giver
“I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” (Acts 20:35 NKJV)
Giving not only blesses the recipient but also enriches the giver. It cultivates a spirit of generosity, compassion, and gratitude within us. As we give, we experience the joy and fulfillment that come from being a channel of God’s love and provision.
Giving helps us break free from the grip of greed and selfishness. It shifts our focus from our own needs to the needs of others, fostering a heart of empathy and kindness. When we invest in the lives of others, we store up treasures in heaven and experience true prosperity.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 NKJV)
